In search of spatial patterns (Spatial Statistics workshop)
April 19, 2023, 09:00 - 16:30
Description: This workshop teaches methods and concepts for the analysis of spatial data to a non-geographic audience. We dive into the first law of geography: “Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things.”
We show the implications of this law for the practical analysis of spatial phenomena and spatial statistics. Specifically, we explain the concept of spatial autocorrelation and determine it in geographic data. We see why standard methods from inferential statistics can only be applied to a limited extent for highly autocorrelated data. Instead, we learn about alternative methods that take into account the first law of geography.
